Programme 5

“Fitness through fun”
the high school / youth club session

a series of 45 to 60 minute sessions for KS3 & 4 students

Session objective - to encourage all the students to participate in various individual skipping skills, playground routines and games.

Session content - a practical induction to a range of age and ability related individual skipping skills, and team games within long ropes.

Session participants - participating students are to be from years 7 to 11, and have either no or some skipping skills.

Session format - in all the ‘training’ sessions, the students will experience a mixture of age and ability appropriate skills and games.

Session key points - to show and share a mixture of skills and games to each age group.

High Schools Sessions - our suggestion is that we utilise the whole day, and work within the school / college time-table. Each year group session will have a mixture of individual skipping skills, and a least 1 long-rope chase game. The basis is to encourage all participants to experience a fairly intensive ‘work-out’, and recognise the cardio-vascular and respiratory benefits of each exercise.

If there is an opportunity to hold a demonstration at the end of the day, particularly if working with one particular year group has been the focus of the day, then it would be beneficial to bring all class groups together to share the skills and individuals from each class can perform.

• all students will be given an explanation of the safety aspects involved in all the skipping activities.

• all students will be given an explanation of the health and fitness benefits they will experience by practicing the skipping skills.

• all students will practice skills appropriate to their age and stage of physical development.

• all students will be encouraged to continue to develop their skill proficiency in the weeks after the session.

• all students will be encouraged to share with, and pass the skills learnt onto other pupils in the school

Youth Club Sessions - our suggestion is that all participants attempt the basic school-based skills and games, as they do impact on personal levels of fitness, but as the focus of these sessions is more on inter-action between participants, creating an atmosphere of fun is the priority.

Session conclusion - at the end of either session, it is hoped these young people will have been sufficiently engaged in both the skipping skills and the games, that they will have recognised the general health benefits, and wish to continue as part of their own fitness regimes.

Fees - based upon session/s duration and number of participants.
