Programme 4
“Fitness through fun” - full-day
3 x 30 min. sessions for KS1
and 4 x 45 min. sessions for KS2 & whole school demo *
Session objective - to encourage all the children to participate in various individual skipping skills, playground routines and games.
Session content - a practical induction to a range of age and ability related individual skipping skills, and team games within long ropes.
Session participants - participating children are to be from Reception and through years 1 to 6, and have either no or some skipping skills.
Session format - in all the ‘training’ sessions, the children will experience a mixture of age and ability appropriate skills and games.
Session key points - to show and share a mixture of skills and games to each Key Stage.
Our suggestion is that we utilise the whole day, and hold the first session from 9.00 to 10.30 for KS1. From 10.30 to 12.00 we take years 3 and 4 children for their sessions. (we recognise there may have to be some adjustment to timings due to lunch / hall arrangement). From 1.00 to 2.30, we work with years 5 and 6 children. At 2.30 a selection of the children from years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 then present their skills to the rest of school in a 30-minute demonstration. (again times may have to vary due to lunch and end-of-day timetable)
• all children will be given an explanation of the safety aspects involved in all the skipping activities.
• all children will be given an explanation of the health and fitness benefits they will experience by practicing the skipping skills.
• all children will practice skills appropriate to their age and stage of physical development.
• all children will be encouraged to continue to develop their skill proficiency in the weeks after the session.
• all children will be encouraged to share with, and pass the skills learnt onto other pupils in the school
Session conclusion* - at the end of the afternoon, the purpose of this ‘celebration’ assembly is for ‘selected’ children to demonstrate their skills to the rest of school.
During the ‘training’ sessions held with years 2 to 6, various different playground games and skills will have been practiced, and the assembly is for each class to share ‘their’ skills with each other class, and then encourage participation in the weeks after. Similarly, the Coach will initiate by discussion with the Teaching Staff some measures of skill development, as hopefully the School will embrace a continuity of the skipping in the weeks ahead. A ‘Staff Training Session’ could be added to the end of the day if appropriate.
Fee - This programme will be charged at £1.50 per pupil on a head-count basis.
This fee will be invoiced after the event.
