Programme 2

“Fitness through fun” - half-day

This session runs for either a morning or afternoon, i.e. 2 to 2½. hours

Session objective - to encourage the children selected to participate in various individual skipping skills, playground routines and games.

Session content - a practical induction to a range of individual, partner and ‘double-dutch’ skipping skills, and team games within long ropes.

Session participants - participating children can be from Key Stage 1 or 2, and either have existing skipping skills or not.

Session format - an ‘ideal’ session is for the children to experience a mixture of skills and games in either a 45-minute, or 90-minute schedule.

Session key points - to show and share a mixture of age and ability appropriate skills, our suggestion is that we hold two 45-minute sessions, one for a group of years 3 and 4 children and then follow this with a group of year 5 and 6 children (both groups having 10 from each class).

• all children will be given an explanation of the safety aspects involved in all the skipping activities.

• all children will be given an explanation of the health and fitness benefits they will experience by practicing the skipping skills.

• all children will practice skills appropriate to their stage of physical development.

• all children will be encouraged to continue to develop their skill proficiency in the weeks after the session.

• all children will be encouraged to share with, and pass the skills learnt onto other pupils in the school

Session conclusion - at the end of their training session, the children will have the confidence to demonstrate their skills to the rest of their Key Stage, or if appropriate the whole school.

The purpose of this ‘demonstration’ is to enthuse the rest of the children in school to see the ‘fun’ that can be had, and ask them to embrace the skipping as an activity. The outcome being, that without realising it, the ‘fitness’ benefits that the skipping exercises provide, will come naturally.

An additional aim is to also stimulate those children who would not ‘normally‘ join in with playground ‘team games’, to see they can now do so, recognising that skipping is not a competitive sport, but a fun activity to do whenever they want to.

A programme of skill development will also be outlined to a member of the School’s Teaching Staff (normally the Primary Link Teacher) by the Skipping Coach at the end of the session, this to create some continuity of the skipping in the weeks ahead.

Fee - This programme will be charged at £30.00 per hour or part thereof.
This fee will be invoiced after the event.
